Katarina started skating when she was five years old. Her success allowed her to show her talent and gain entry into the Karl-Marx-Stadt special school specifically designed for gifted children. The school where she was enrolled, she was introduced to the coach Jutta Muler. Her breakthrough year was in 1982, when she placed second in the World Championships in Copenhagen. Since that time, her grace and elegance captured the eye of all. Then she began dominating this sport. Olympic Success at Sarajevo, at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal for figure skating in women's in a highly competitive contest. A few years later, she won an even tighter contest. Although she lost in the free-skating contest, gold was awarded for her performances on the mandatory figures, as well as on the short program. Witt became the first female repeated winner of figure skating after Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt had many successes as a performer, but she returned to her sport for competition at her participation in the Lillehammer Winter Games of 1994. While she did not win a single medal, she was awed by fans even with her seventh place finish. Witt's entry into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame took place in 1995.
